CURRICULUM

My name is Carlos Bonilla, I'm from Ecuador, and I currently live in Patchogue, NY, since June, 2018.

I started drawing and painting when I was a kid. I often used to participate and win the art competitions in my school.

At 15 years old I began to paint with oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor; based in the meticulous study of the great promoters of Modern Art such as Cezzane, Van Gogh, Munch, Modigliani, and Picasso.

At 19 years old I opted to study art in the Faculty of Fine Arts in the city of Quito, but I left my studies six months after because I found it boring to follow certain rules, techniques, and methods that they teach in the academies. I decided to study and explore on my own.

At 21 years old I made my first exhibition called '' Expresiones y emociones del alma'' in my native city with a collection of 30 works of my authorship painted in oil and acrylic.

Six months later I made my second individual exhibition in the city of Ambato with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Ecuador.

I participated in different events and art fairs in my country. However, I stopped to paint for almost 10 years for personal reasons.

Now, after 10 years of absence, I return to paint because I felt the need to do it again.

STATEMENT

The world changes continuously. It is for that reason that my work is constantly changing too since my inclusion in the Art, so I tell myself never remain static, break rules, evolve, create, and propose something new even if it seems grotesque. I define myself as an expressionist painter because I paint what I hear, look, and feel around me. In my opinion I think Art does not have to be figuratively beautiful, but rather it has to be representative, and expressive. I define my style as a combination of Expressionism, Fauvism and Cubism that consists of partial distortion of figuration and perspective reflected with vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and lines.
